Danny DeVito and ex Rhea Perlman still have ‘a good relationship’

Danny DeVito and his estranged wife Rhea Perlman still talk daily and enjoy weekly meals despite separating (for the second time) in 2017 following 35 years of marriage.

‘We’re always over at her house,’ the 81-year-old Taxi alum said in his AARP cover story Wednesday.

‘We see the grandchildren together, that kind of stuff. So that’s a good relationship.’

DeVito continued: ‘No matter what happens in your life, the most important thing is having family and friends – reliable people in our lives who we can talk to, who we can open up to, who we can rely on to be there. I’m very fortunate.’

The 5ft former couple, who previously split in 2012, ‘hit it off’ immediately upon meeting in 1971 after she watched his performance as a demented stable boy in the off-Broadway play The Shrinking Bride.

It was love at first sight for the 78-year-old Cheers alum who moved into DeVito’s Manhattan apartment two weeks later, and she went on to have a five-episode stint as his Taxi character’s girlfriend between 1979-1982.

‘We liked off-Broadway stuff. We went to movies all the time. We made little movies together – short films,’ the Emmy-winning actor recalled.

‘We had a lot in common, and we fell in love. A nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn and an Italian from New Jersey: I cooked, and she ate.’

DeVito and Perlman went on to have 43-year-old daughter Lucy, 41-year-old daughter Gracie and 38-year-old son Jake along with three-year-old granddaughter Sinclair and two-year-old grandson Carmine.

The Daily Mail has reached out to the amicable exes’ shared publicist for comment but did not immediately hear back.

‘We are still married,’ the Poker Face actress confirmed on the Wiser Than Me podcast in 2023.

‘And we are still very good friends and we see each other a lot. And our family is still the most important thing to both of us.’

Perlman cautioned: ‘It was very difficult at first. And there were a lot of reasons that we separated, which I’m not gonna go into. But it took time for us to come to this somehow pretty decent understanding and relationship with each other.’

On March 9, the inseparable pair reunited for an Architectural Digest video with their eldest daughter to discuss their family’s pᴀssion for cinema.

‘I remember when Godfather one was in New York and Rhea and I stood in line in the rain, pouring rain for, like, it had to be an hour,’ DeVito recalled.
