Hill Street Blues and Cinderella star Jon Cypher ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at 94

Jon Cypher, who famously starred on Hill Street Blues and played Julie Andrews’s Prince Charming in the 1957 musical Cinderella, has died at 94.

The actor’s family announced on Monday that he died at his home in Central Point, Oregon, on August 3. His wife of 40 years, scientist Carol Rosin, was by his side. 

His cause of death was not disclosed. 

Cypher will be buried at the Forest Conservation Burial Ground in Ashland, Oregon, ‘under tall trees in a meadow, wrapped in a completely natural, biodegradable shroud, obliging his wish to return to nature,’ as per his obituary. 

According to his wishes, his burial ‘will be in a place to observe and honor nature, life and death, and the grief that connects us all. His prayer for peace and love to prevail for all life on earth and in the cosmos, is represented at Jon’s forest burial site, open for all to visit.’ 

His loved ones remembered him as ‘the most kind of men with a great sense of humor, brilliant mind, and a huge loving and caring heart for all sacred life.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to Rosin for comment.

‘Jon sang opera in four languages, and was known to burst out in song, bringing joy to every event.’ 

His obituary also noted that he ‘was outspoken in support for urgent recognition of truth regarding non-threatening extra-terrestials and their crafts, and promoted The Treaty to Prevent the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space.’

Cypher was born in New York City in 1932 and graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in 1949 and Brooklyn College in 1953. He later received a master’s degree in marriage and family counseling from the University of Vermont. 

He is best known for playing Police Chief Fletcher Daniels on Hill Street Blues, which ran from 1981 until 1987.

He made his television debut as Prince Christopher alongside Andrews in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s musical Cinderella. 

At the time, Cypher was still relatively unknown.

The lavish production aired live in color on CBS in March 1957, drawing an audience of more than 107 million viewers. 

His other notable roles included General Marcus Craig on Major Dad, and Man-At-Arms in the 1987 movie Masters of the Universe.

His career also spanned appearances on shows like Dynasty, Law & Order, Walker, Texas Ranger, Knots Landing, As the World Turns and more.

He is best known for playing Police Chief Fletcher Daniels on Hill Street Blues, which ran from 1981 until 1987; Seen in a still

Cypher’s career also extended to Broadway, where his credits included Man of La Mancha, The Great White Hope, 1776, Coco and Big. 

In a 2014 interview, Cypher spoke about his career and having thick skin to deal with rejection.

He said acting is ‘not an easy profession. You’re always being judged, by critics, by the audience. I’d say to any young actor who is thinking about entering the fray, “Gird your loins very sturdily and have a sharp sword,” because you have to pick yourself up many, many, many times.’

He also spoke about getting older in the industry: ‘I have met actors (that I thought were very good) who were 55 years old, working as bartenders, waiting for their big break. Do you know how I feel about being old? Shocked. You know you’re going to get old, but when it happens: No way — unbelievable.’

Aside from his acting career, he also authored a book of limericks in 2019 тιтled, If You’re Not Depressed You Oughta Be in Therapy. 

Cypher was married to Ruth Wagner from 1965 to 1975. Following their divorce, he married Rosin in 1986.
