Lifeguards warn beautiful beach is one of America’s most dangerous

Lifeguards have warned visitors not to wade in the waters at one of San Diego’s most beloved beaches as powerful currents have resulted in multiple mᴀss rescues and sucked swimmers into fatal conditions. 

Windansea Beach is known for its surf breaks and underwater reefs, but as Hurricane Genevieve ravages off the Pacific coast, swimming has become extremely dangerous. 

The National Weather Service has implemented a beach hazards statement through Wednesday afternoon for all San Diego beaches, citing large breaking waves reaching up to nine feet. 

Marine Lieutenant Charlie Knight told local Fox affiliate KUSI that lifeguards made over 107 rescues at Windansea just on Sunday. 

Across San Diego beaches, lifeguards reported 464 rescues this past weekend, which is significantly more than the 290 rescues over the Fourth of July weekend. 

Lifeguards have warned that the lulls between mᴀssive swells can deceive swimmers into thinking it is safe to go in. 

Sara Dym, a visitor from Texas, told KUSI that the lifeguards advised her nine- and 11-year-old children to avoid the water due to the ‘extremely dangerous’ conditions.  

‘This year, we’re a little too scared because we’re seeing experienced people get dragged,’ she added.

San Diego lifeguards have reported more than 11 million visitors since the start of the summer on June 1, with over 3,160 rescues.

Just a few weeks into the summer season, the San Diego Fire Department shared images and video footage from multiple rescues, warning swimmers to stay out of the water if the National Weather Service issues a beach hazard statement. 

Earlier this week, a newly engaged soccer star was found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at La Jolla Shores Beach, which is just three miles from Windansea. 

Bryn Waite, 26, was identified after her body washed up on shore and she was found by a bystander, according to the San Diego Police Department. 

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office listed her case as a ‘non homicide’ and is investigating the cause of death. 

Also this week, a 53-year-old man was found ᴅᴇᴀᴅ after he disappeared while swimming at another San Diego County beach, the United States Coast Guard announced. 

He was later identified as Robert Edmonston, and his cause of death was ruled a drowning. Edmonston’s body was found just hours before the NWS issued a beach hazards statement.  

The dangerous weather conditions are a result of Hurricane Genevieve, which formed off the Pacific Coast and became a Category 5 on Sunday

The advisory has been issued until at least Wednesday afternoon as Hurricane Genevieve continues to bring high winds resulting in powerful rip currents in the Pacific Ocean. 

‘People need to know we have a strong south swell coming through, we have large waves, strong rip currents. It’s important to know your limits,’ Marine Safety Lieutenant Knight told CBS News 8 on Monday. 

‘And if you’re not an extremely strong ocean swimmer, we recommend you do not go into the water.’ 

Lifeguards recommend that if you are caught in a rip current, not to fight it and swim parallel to the shoreline.
